Delbert James, son of Harold and Bertha (Burns) McDermott, was born October 30, 1938 in Dubuque, Iowa. The family moved to Dyersville shortly before he started high school. After graduating from St. Francis Xavier High School in 1957, Del enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserves. He completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and then attended Loras College in Dubuque.
Del was united in marriage with Barbara Lammers on July 8, 1961 at the St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. The family lived in Dyersville as Del worked with his father selling livestock feed and other farm products at the Model Hatchery and Epworth Feed & Supply.
The family moved to Carroll in 1968 when he took a position selling livestock feed for BP Feed. Following BP Feeds sale in 1989, Del continued selling feed for several companies before starting his own company, D-Js Feeds LLC.
Del underwent triple-bypass heart surgery following a heart attack in 1980, and received a heart transplant on August 15, 1994, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He became an outspoken advocate for organ donation and spoke to numerous groups in Iowa and Nebraska to promote organ donation. He did not allow his frequent, and often serious, health issues to curtail his many activities.
He entered public office in 2000 when he was elected to a four-year term as Carroll County Supervisor. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2008. Del eagerly embraced his role as supervisor, serving as Chairman of the Board twice. A proud Democrat, he was also active on the Carroll County Democratic Central Committee.
Del enjoyed golfing, vintage cars, spending time at his lake home with family, watching sporting events, and having coffee with friends. He displayed a keen sense of humor throughout his life, and quickly made new friends. He was a devoted member of Holy Spirit Parish, and a dedicated supporter of Kuemper Catholic School.
Dels health began to seriously fail about a month before his death on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the age of 70.
Del will be missed by his wife, Barb McDermott of Carroll; seven children, Mike McDermott of Carroll; Michelle (Bill) Meyer of Manning; Meg (Dave) Schoeppner of Templeton; Mitch (Rosemary) McDermott of Omaha; Mickie (Scott) Rupiper of Carroll; Matt (Heather) McDermott of Des Moines; and Maria McDermott of Carroll; sisters Marilyn (Elmer) Hentges of Dyersville; Kathey (Dick) Brown of Naples, FL; and Mary (Tim) Showalter of Dyersville; sixteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, Weston Schoeppner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Bertha McDermott.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Kuemper Catholic School Foundation.
